An Update on some children/Families we are helping

As promised we’re just giving an update of some children/Families that the Sam Pilcher Trust has recently helped or in the process of organising. These children have all been introduced to SPT by Clic Sargent social workers:

1 .  A 17 year old boy suffering with Leukaemia was struggling with travel costs to/from Bristol Royal Children’s Hospital for 8 weeks of Radiotherapy. Sam Pilcher Trust has granted £400.

2 .  A 15 month old little girl has Wilm’s Tumour and is reacting violently to her chemotherapy treatment and is constantly vomiting on the carpets in their home. Sam Pilcher Trust has granted £388 towards the cost of buying and fitting Laminate flooring { Clic Sargent is covering the balance }.

3 .  A 16 month old little boy with a brain stem tumour was living in an  overcrowded house. Clic Sargent has helped to find a larger home for the family and Sam Pilcher Trust has granted £250 to help towards the removal costs.

4 .  A young lady treated with a brain tumour has started a child care course. She is doing OK at the moment but she and her family are aware that the tumour will return but not when. Sam Pilcher Trust has agreed to cover the cost of a new laptop to help her on her child care course. She is currently investigating which one she would like.

Colin, Terasa and Max went for a meeting with Dr Dilys Neil and colleagues from Gloucester Royal Hospital, two young people who are currently receiving treatment and their families.   The Meeting was hospitably hosted by Dean Close School. The plans are to provide a major refit of the Teenager’s Activity Room, Treatment Cubicles and Kitchen facilities in the Oncology Unit at Gloucester Royal Children’s Hospital.

We would like to thank everyone who has helped the Trust in the past and it illustrates how important your support has been.

Sam’s Spring heroes

Nick John and his family were of great support to Sam during his illness and have offered much help for SPT since its inception.  Nick is married to Sue and they have two sons Nathan and Elliot who went to the same school as Sam – Swell C of E Primary.

Elliot joined Sam and some of his other school friends when they did a sponsored bike ride around Upper and Lower Slaughter.  Unfortunately, Elliot fell off his bike and broke his arm and this was while Nick and Nathan were doing a sponsored walk along Hadrian’s Wall.  So SPT think it is time that Nick and his family should get some recognition for all their hard work.

Here is Nick proudly wearing a Sam Pilcher Trust t-shirt and later on recovering with very therapeutic first aid when he raced the train from Toddington to Cheltenham Racecourse.  He didn’t quite beat the train but did manage to see it as it pulled into the station.

Marvellous Matthew

Another wonderful surprise for the Trust was when Heidi Coles and Tony Lane invited us to dinner.  Matthew and Ben Hall were there and presented SPT with a magnificent donation of £700.  This was gained by Matthew extremely kindly donating his special birthday gifts to go to the Trust.  Thank you too to Ben for suggesting SPT; Ben was also a great helper last summer at the Teas in Lower Slaughter Village Hall

The Rotary Club helps again

THREE charities have received a donation of £1,000 from the North Cotswold Rotary Club.

Kate’s Home Nursing, Home-Start Cotswolds and the Sam Pilcher Trust were each presented with a cheque last month by Bob Hadley.

He said:
“We chose these three local charities because they each do so much to help vulnerable families, those who are sick and in need of nursing care, or those whose children have cancer.

We have been very impressed by their work in the community, and each of these wonderful organisations is based here in the north Cotswolds.”
Rotarians put in a spin

The Rotary Club of the North Cotswolds asked SPT to attend a Rotary meeting and not only were Colin and Terasa given a delicious dinner but were presented with a magnificent cheque for the Sam Pilcher Trust for £1,150.  We can only thank them once again for their outstanding support and guidance for the Trust.

Diamond Geezers

Unfortunately the start to the New Year was not so good due to the cancellation of the SPT New Year’s Eve Extravaganza.

However, just when the Trust was loosing spirit SPT received a phone call from Barry Pilcher to inform the Trust that a cheque was on its way.

Barry is in a band called The Diamonds and they had just performed a gig to help raise funds for the Trust and had raised the magnificent figure of £580

Flying High

It was a fantastic end to the year for SPT with the Concert of the Royal Air Force at the Cotswold SchoolSPT had a stall and managed to raise £150 in about only 2 hours.  Colin and Terasa even managed to have seats next to some very important dignitaries of the Rotary Club and enjoyed a wonderful festive concert

Miles Ahead!

Miles Taylor became the 2nd Scout to receive the Sam Pilcher Trust award.  This award is given to a Beaver/Cub/Scout who has shown outstanding dedication and enthusiasm over the past year.

The Rotary Club of the North Cotswolds

On 9th October, Colin and Terasa gave a presentation to The Rotary Club of the North Cotswolds about SPT.  It was a very nerve-wracking task and was the first the Trust has so far performed but we should not have feared because we were given a wonderful reception and were overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity given.  Below is one of the wonderful comments that we received:
“Albert gave a vote of thanks that echoed all the members’ appreciation of how you explained your Trust, both present and future. I wish to add my thanks for such a clear and concise presentation. I am sure we will be working closely with you in the future and will want to know when your website is up and running, so that we can be up to speed with events. All the very best for the future of the Sam Pilcher Trust”
Tigers grrrrr.

Yes SPT has purchased 60 tigers.  After much investigation at Mothercare we managed to find T-shirts for them to wear (Tiny Baby size); then Will at Wreal Embroidery embroidered these too.  There are many plans for these furry friends including:

 • Giving them to the children at the Oncology departments at Bristol and Gloucester Royal Hospitals.
 • Finding homes/shops/businesses around the area to provide Name the Tiger events.
 • Selling them and using as Raffle Prizes at SPT fund raising events.
